In February I was at a talk at the University of Sussex, in the pouring rain, when I discovered that the person who invented Earth Overshoot Day was sitting right there on the panel. I'd been thinking about this concept for years. Today, 22 May, is the UK's Earth Overshoot Day, the date our ecological budget runs out. The accounting is neutral. The politics are in the data.

I gave a talk at Barcombe Eco Fair on fast fashion. I do it for free, because the information is too important to sit on. I've given versions of it before, but this one had some positivity at the end! The EU laws that could finally make producers pay, and research that put a number on exactly how much mending a jacket actually saves. It's more than you'd think.

This year’s Earth Day theme made me grin like the actual Cheshire Cat. Our Power, Our Planet. The theme is a rallying cry, but it's also something better than that: it's a reminder that the story was never really theirs to tell. This year's Earth Day is tapping us on the shoulder and whispering: you're already doing it. Keep going.

I love Earth Hour precisely because it is so easy and so quietly powerful. You don't need money, expertise, or influence. You need to switch something off. In a culture that valorises noise, consumption and constant connection, the deliberate act of stopping, going dark, going still, going present, feels almost radical.
